FAQ

What is WMA?

Western Martial Arts, or WMA for short, is a collective term used to describe the combined martial arts of Western Europe. Some of these arts date back as far as the early medieval times and cover a variety of weapons as well as unarmed combat. An alternative term which is growing in popularity is HEMA, or Historical European Martial Arts.

Who are the Company for Historical Combat?

We are a group of Western Martial Artists who study the works of George Silver, a Tudor swordsman, as well as the system described in the manuscript known as I.33 which consists of sword and buckler combat and dates back to the C13th.

Do you fight with swords?

Yes we do, though not as you might think. Our training consists of solo drills, paired drills and sparring as well as a series of exercises designed to improve our ability to weild our swords.

Can I come?

Of course you can, though for insurance purposes we can only accept members of 18 years of age or older. It's also probably better if you go on one of our introductory courses first, not only is it cheaper for you, but it is a nice easy way to get a good grasp of the basics of swordwork.

How much does it cost?

The Introduction to English Swordsmanship course costs £35 and lasts for six weeks. For more information have a look here

Who are HEMAC?

HEMAC or the Historical European Martial Arts Coalition is a large group of HEMA practitioners based across Europe who share a common goal. That goal is simply the furtherance of HEMA in the world today. As a group we have some of the foremost practitioners and teachers of WMA in the world. The CHC is a member group of HEMAC.
